Author Kathy Kleiman chronicles the story of six nearly-forgotten women who programmed the first supercomputer in “Proving Ground.” Enlisted by the Army during World War II to calculate ballistic trajectories, six women mathematicians from across the U.S. were then tasked with programming the ENIAC, the first general-purpose, programmable, electronic computer. While early women programming pioneers Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper have taken their place in the annals of computer history, Kleiman shows us that there were other women programmers — like the ENIAC 6 — who deserve to be recognized as well, says AP reviewer Mae Anderson.

A Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain is agreeing to pay $8 million to several states over a 2019 data breach that involved some 34 million payment cards, The Pennsylvania attorney general’s office said on Tuesday that Wawa Inc. didn't take reasonable security measures to prevent hackers from installing malware that is thought to have collected card numbers, customer names and other data. Wawa is agreeing to new policies to toughen its security efforts to combat data breaches. The settlement was made with attorneys general in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Authorities says the person who was stabbed to death while taking part in the attempted armed robbery on a Chicago commuter train was a 15-year-old boy. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the teen as Darin McNair of Chicago. Police say McNair was holding a gun when he and others attempted to rob a person on the Red Line train on the South Side early Monday. The person targeted by the group stabbed the teen in the chest. Police say no one has been arrested.

A Pennsylvania representative attended the same-sex wedding of his son three days after voting against legislation to protect the recognition of same-sex marriages. Republican Rep. Glenn Thompson voted against the bill brought up by Democrats amid concerns that the Supreme Court could jeopardize the rights of same-sex couples to marry nationwide following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The bill passed Tuesday, 267-157. Thompson attended the same-sex wedding of his son Friday. Thompson's office says he and his wife are “very happy to welcome their new son-in-law into their family.” Thompson’s press secretary also called the bill “nothing more than an election-year messaging stunt for Democrats in Congress."

The Jackie Robinson Museum has opened in Manhattan with a gala ceremony attended by the 100-year-old wife of the barrier-breaking ballplayer and two of his children. Rachel Robinson watched the half-hour outdoor ceremony from a wheelchair in the 80-degree heat, then cut a ribbon to cap a project launched in 2008. Her 72-year-old daughter, Sharon, also watched from a wheelchair and 70-year-old son David spoke to the crowd of about 200 sitting on folding chairs arrayed on a closed-off section of the major New York thoroughfare where the museum is located.

As Los Angeles hurtles toward a possible return of a countywide indoor mask mandate, restaurateurs and bar owners are bracing for a new wave of backlash and enforcement difficulties — reminiscent of many of their industry's hardships during the pandemic-spurred pivots and rapidly evolving di…

A divided federal appeals court panel is backing Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order that forbids school districts from imposing mask mandates on schools to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The ruling Monday from the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ended a lower federal court injunction allowing such mandates. Families of children with disabilities had sued, saying the children were vulnerable and that the lack of a masking requirement endangered their health. Writing for the majority in a 2-1 ruling, Judge Andrew Oldham said there are other reasonable options for schools to accommodate the children's health concerns.

MIAMI — Nearly all of the dead victims recovered from a Miami-bound migrant boat that overturned Sunday in the Bahamas were women, the second time in two months that an overwhelming number of Haitian women have lost their lives in a vessel that capsized.

The parents of a 14-year-old girl killed by Los Angeles police in a clothing store last year have filed a lawsuit against the department and the officer whose rifle round pierced a dressing room wall. Valentina Orellana Peralta and her mother were shopping for Christmas clothes on Dec. 23 at a Burlington store in the San Fernando Valley’s North Hollywood neighborhood when an officer fired three rifle rounds at a suspect. One of the bullets went through the dressing room wall and fatally struck Orellana Peralta as her mother held her. The LAPD declined to comment Tuesday. The lawsuit was filed July 14.

A man who attacked police officers with poles during the U.S. Capitol riot has been sentenced to more than five years in prison. The sentence that U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan gave Mark Ponder on Tuesday matches the longest term of imprisonment so far among hundreds of Capitol riot prosecutions. Ponder, a 56-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., asked the judge for mercy before she sentenced him to five years and three months in prison. That's the same sentence that Chutkan gave Robert Palmer, a Florida man who also pleaded guilty to assaulting police at the Capitol. More than 200 other Capitol riot defendants have been sentenced so far.

Suspected gang members have set fire to a courthouse near Haiti’s capital in the most recent incident targeting the country’s crumbling judicial system. Roosevelt Zamor, prosecutor for the Croix-des-Bouquets region, told The Associated Press that important documents were set on fire early Tuesday and that authorities shut down the partially burned courthouse located northeast of Port-au-Prince. The fire occurred in a region controlled by the 400 Mawozo gang, whom authorities blame for killing a police inspector on Sunday inside a church in Croix-des-Bouquets and later setting the building on fire.

When the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that established a right to abortion, it sparked legal changes and court challenges in states nationwide. In some states, there are multiple bans and multiple lawsuits in play, keeping the landscape unsettled. And further legislation could soon change things again. The June 24 Dobbs v. Jackson ruling is expected to lead ultimately to bans or deep restrictions on access to abortion in about half the states. Meanwhile, most Democrat-led states have put into place policies intended to protect abortion access.

Three Republican challengers are mounting energetic campaigns to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier in Washington’s 8th Congressional District, a key target of GOP efforts to retake control of the House. Army veteran Jesse Jensen ran unsuccessfully against Schrier in 2020. King County Council Member Reagan Dunn is a former federal prosecutor whose mother once held the seat. And Matt Larkin is a business executive and former state attorney general candidate. They're hammering on inflation, high gas prices, crime and dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden ahead of the Aug. 2 primary. Schrier is highlighting her pragmatic service to the district and stressing she's the only pro-choice candidate.

DETROIT — With a week to go before Michigan's primary, national Democrats are spending big to help the far-right challenger to freshman Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump.

President Joe Biden wants to convince a skeptical public that the U.S. is not, in fact, heading into a recession. He's sending that message in the leadup to the release of a key report on the economy's overall health. The Commerce Department on Thursday will release new gross domestic product figures. Top forecasts are predicting that the figure will be negative for the second straight quarter — an informal signal that the country is stuck in a downturn. The Biden administration is pre-emptively telling voters not to judge the economy by GDP or inflation alone. Republicans see political chum in the water. They suggest the GDP report will show an economy in collapse.

Former Vice President Mike Pence will publish his autobiography just after this year’s midterm elections and it will be titled “So Help Me God.” The book will recount Pence’s journey from his Indiana youth to the vice presidency, with stops in the House of Representatives and governor’s mansion in between, according to publisher Simon & Schuster. It promises to also discuss his rift with former President Donald Trump on Jan. 6, 2021, when, according to the publisher, “Pence kept his oath to the Constitution.” The book will be available on Nov. 15, earlier that initially expected.

The first shots of “A Love Song” are a signal for the rest of the film, stubborn flowers and shrubs pushing through dry, stony earth. Max Walker-Silverman’s film is also a spare beauty, delicate but strong and tenacious, exploring time, love and nature. It is about two people in late middle age who wonder if love can spark again. Though it is rated PG, “A Love Song” is very much an adult film, quiet and slow and very, very restrained. It may require the viewer to relearn how to be patient amid all the rival Marvel boom nonsense offerings at the theaters these days.

The daughters of a woman killed in 1994 are asking the state of Alabama to spare the life of their mother's killer. Terryln Hall said she and her sister want James to instead spend life in prison. Hall said that after thinking and praying about it, the family forgave James. State Rep. The veteran 36-year-old receiver made the announcement via a video on social media that featured highlights of his 13 NFL seasons. The former Texas Tech standout made his NFL debut with the St. Louis Rams in 2009 as an undrafted free agent and spent his first four seasons there before being signed by the Patriots in 2013. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — When the Parkland killer was asked why he wanted to buy an AR-15-style rifle, he said it was to go shooting with his friends over the weekend, a former gun shop owner testified Tuesday.

The U.S. economy is caught in an awkward, painful place. A confusing one, too. Growth appears to be sputtering, home sales are tumbling and economists warn of a potential recession ahead. But consumers keep spending, businesses keep posting profits and the economy keeps adding hundreds of thousands of jobs each month. In the midst of it all, prices have accelerated to four-decade highs, and the Federal Reserve is desperately trying to douse the inflationary flames with higher interest rates. That’s making borrowing more expensive for households and businesses. The Fed hopes to pull off the triple axel of central banking: Slow the economy just enough to curb inflation without causing a recession.
